David P. Kelley Blugold Promise Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria

Shall be awarded to an outstanding incoming freshman student who has graduated from high school in Wisconsin, has been accepted for admission to UW-Eau Claire and demonstrates significant financial need as verified by the UW-Eau Claire Financial Aid office.

To be considered, students must rank in the top 25% of their graduating classes and have a minimum of a 25 composite on the ACT (or comparable SAT), have a well- rounded high school record of academic achievement, leadership and involvement in extracurricular activities. In general a student who has a zest for life and a desire to get the most out of his/her college education will receive primary consideration.

Preference is to be given to students who are active in their community, particularly with causes such as blood and food drives, shelters and other efforts to make a difference in their community.

Recipients who have a successful freshman year and maintain good academic standing by the end of their first year will receive a $1,000 scholarship their sophomore year, if they continue to demonstrate financial need.

Application Procedure

To be considered for Incoming Freshman Student Admissions Scholarships, you must first be admitted to the university. Once you are admitted, you must:

  • Go to the Admissions Scholarship page and read through the information in the Apply for Scholarships section.
  • Then you can use the Apply online for scholarships link to complete the Admissions Scholarship application, available on the GOLD for Blugolds Scholarship Network.
Selection Procedure

The Admissions Office will coordinate the selection process, which is highly competitive. Applications will be considered holistically and include a review of the student's high school transcript, test scores, essays, class rank, class rigor, activities/involvement, etc.

Selection Deadline Screening of candidates will begin in December for some early awards and continue through the spring or until awards are accepted.
Notification Scholarship award notices will be sent to scholarship recipients by the beginning of April of student's senior year. If scholarships are declined, they will be re-awarded to alternates through the summer months.
Special Notes

Originally from Winona, MN, David Kelley is a 1983 UW-Eau Claire graduate who was a history major and a political science minor. He has gone on to a successful business development career in the agricultural industry and now serves as an account manager for the American Red Cross in St. Paul, MN. He has also been a long-time basketball coach in the Twin Cities at the high school and community levels.

Dave is a long-time advocate for UW-Eau Claire, often recommending the university to young people he has coached and mentored. He hopes his Blugold Promise Scholarship helps provide the needed resources for an incoming UW-Eau Claire student to experience what Dave experienced; a quality education at one of the nation's premier regional public universities.
