Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have a declared major in either the College of Business or Kinesiology and be a full-time student. Scholarships will be awarded each year by both the College of Business or Kinesiology departments. A minimum total GPA of 3.0 is required and a current FAFSA must be on file in Financial Aid.

Succeeding generations of the Hanke family are given preference for this scholarship, which may be renewable. Descendants must self-identify by the application deadline and meet the criteria above in order to be considered.

Selection Procedure

The COB Scholarship Committee will select the College of Business recipient.

The Kinesiology department will select the Kinesiology recipient.

Notification

For the College of Business award, the assistant dean will send a letter to the recipient.

For the Kinesiology award, The scholarship recipient will be informed by letter from the department chair. The award will be announced at the College of Education and Human Sciences awards reception.

Special Notes

This scholarship is possible through the generosity of two graduates, Janet and LaVern Hanke.

LaVern Hanke is a 1950 Wausau Senior High School graduate who served four years in the US Air Force and graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1959, with a BA in sociology, then UW-Madison in 1962 with MA in social work. He was first employed by the state of Wisconsin Division of Corrections as a Probation Parole Agent in Waupaca County, then in 1966, was employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs at Wisconsin Veterans Home at King, WI as its initial Director of Social Services. In 1978 he was appointed as Deputy Commandant at WVH. He retired in 1991. He continues to live in Waupaca and is active in the community by serving on the City Council, active in Waupaca Lions Club, Waupaca Nomads, Trinity Lutheran Church, curling and golf.

Janet Hanke is a 1952 Merrill High School graduate and a 1954 graduate of the Lincoln County Teachers College. She taught elementary grades 1-6 at LaFollette School in Merrill School District for two years followed by graduation from UW-Eau Claire in1958, with a BA in education. She taught grade four for two years in Rochester, MN and one year in Madison, WI, and then in the Waupaca School District from 1969-1993. She is currently retired and continues to be active in the community, serving in various positions at Trinity Lutheran Church, the Waupaca Lioness Club, and The American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoys curling, golf and reading.

LaVern and Janet are parents of Paul, Rebecca (Hanke) Austin, and Aaron. Paul (1985) and Aaron (1987) are also graduates of UW-Eau Claire.
