Dr. L. Elaine Wendt, professor and dean emerita of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, retired in 2008 after 25 years of teaching at UW-Eau Claire. A native of South Dakota, Dr. Wendt earned a bachelor's degree from South Dakota State University, a master's degree from New York University, and a doctoral degree from the University of Maryland-Baltimore. She began teaching at UW-Eau Claire in 1969; but also worked for a time in nursing in New York City and in Maryland and taught briefly at UW-Milwaukee. She was chair of the department of Family Health Nursing at UW-Eau Claire before becoming interim associate dean in 2002, associate dean in 2003, and dean in 2004.
She was instrumental in helping the College obtain the entitlement to plan the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree program and in establishing the nursing skills laboratory simulation activities. Additionally, Dr. Wendt is the original founder of the annual Nursing Alumni Walk held during Homecoming weekend. Dr. Wendt has long been an advocate of increasing access to the nursing profession and especially of supporting nurse educators.
