|Amount||One award of $1,000.|
To be eligible one must be enrolled in the comprehensive or standard English-teaching major and demonstrate intent to be an English teacher, be student-teaching or preparing to student-teach in a public school, and have an overall GPA of 3.0 or better. Recommendations from teachers and advisers and other information to help determine promise of success as a middle school or secondary public school teacher of English should be considered.
Women students and students with financial need should receive priority.
|Application Procedure||Forms are available in the English department office. Applicants must submit a letter of application, a current transcript, and a resume along with the names of two UW-Eau Claire English professors who can speak to their qualifications for this scholarship.|
|Application Deadline||March 1.|
|Selection Procedure||The department Scholarship Committee will select the recipient based on the scholarship criteria and the strength of the application.|
|Selection Deadline||Approximately April 1.|
|Notification||Notification to the recipient will be made by the Scholarship Committee. The recipient will be formally honored during the annual English Festival Awards Ceremony. The department submits a scholarship award form to Financial Aid.|
|Special Notes||This scholarship was established in 2005 in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Swan, parents of the past President of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation, Carole Swan Halberg. The Swan's believed their daughter would be an English teacher and were surprised when she chose a different career path. The scholarship was established in order to attach their names to the teaching profession and demonstrate their high regard for public education.|
