Eligibility Criteria

Junior: The Award for Outstanding Achievement in Mathematics by a Junior Student is awarded to a student of junior standing who has exhibited outstanding academic achievement as measured by his/her overall grade point average, mathematics grade point average, and number of math courses taken above the 300 level.

The selection is by vote of the Mathematics faculty. A student must be a Mathematics or Physics-Mathematics Comprehensive major who has completed at least 75 credits but no more than 110 credits at the end of the fall semester, is not eligible for the Senior award, and has not applied for graduation at the end of the current semester. Student must have completed at least one 300 level math course at UW-Eau Claire and not have received this award previously.

Further, the student must satisfy either of the following: the student has a total cumulative GPA (resident and transfer) as reported by the registrar of 3.50 or greater and have a resident mathematics GPA of 3.5 or greater OR the student is nominated by a faculty member.

Senior: The Award for Exceptional Achievement in Mathematics by a Senior Student is awarded to one or more undergraduate students. Each recipient has achieved senior status, given evidence of outstanding academic achievement, and exhibited exceptional leadership in mathematics related activities.

The selection is by a vote of the mathematics faculty. A student must be a Mathematics or Physics- Mathematics major who has completed at least 90 credits as counted by the registrar (including at least 27 of the mathematics credits that count toward the major) at the end of the fall semester, must be enrolled during the spring semester in which the award is to be made, and not have received the award previously.

Further, the student must satisfy either of the following: the student has a total cumulative GPA (resident and transfer) as reported by the registrar of 3.50 or greater and have a resident mathematics GPA of 3.50 or greater OR the student is nominated by a faculty member.

Application Procedure There is no application procedure for the junior award. For the senior award, the Awards Committee will request each student who meets the criteria for the award to submit a resume that includes a summary of math-related activities.
Selection Procedure For the junior award:
The Awards Committee will provide a list of names of all student who meet the eligibility criteria listed above at least one week before the Awards Committee plans to begin considering nominees. During this week, members of the Department may nominate any additional students that they believe should be considered for the award (as indicated above), assuming that these nominees also satisfy the other eligibility criteria.

The Awards Committee will determine the nominees (typically three) to be presented to the Mathematics Department by considering the following information:
  1. Math GPA at UW-Eau Claire
  2. Total cumulative (resident and transfer) GPA
  3. Number of resident mathematics credits at or above the 300 level, with a maximum of 30.
The Committee will rank the nominees according to the total found by: Total = 200 x MPGA + 60 x GPA and Math Credits at or above 300.

The Awards Committee will then make available as an attachment to a department meeting agenda, a table which presents the MGPA, GPA and Math Credits at or above 300 and total for each of the nominated candidates. Utilizing this information, selection is by vote of the Mathematics faculty.

For the senior award:
The Awards Committee will provide a list of names of all students who meet the eligibility criteria listed above at least one week before the Awards Committee plans to begin considering nominees.

  3. Participation in math-related activities as reported by the student.
The Committee will rank the nominees according to the total found by: Total = 200 x MPGA + 60 x GPA + 4 x Committee Total. The Committee Total is based on the summary of participation in math-related activities as reported by the students. Each Awards Committee member scores participation in math-related activities on a scale of 0-10 with a score of 10 to reflect the highest level of participation and a score of 0 to reflect the lowest level of participation. The Committee Total for a given candidate is then calculated by adding the points given to that candidate by each member of the Committee.

The Awards Committee will then make available, as an attachment to a Mathematics Department meeting agenda, a table which presents the MGPA, GPA and Committee Total, and Total for each of the nominated candidates. Utilizing this information, selection is made by vote of the Mathematics faculty.
Notification The recipient of this scholarship will receive a notification letter and will be honored at the Department of Mathematics Graduation and Awards Celebration.
Special Notes The senior award recipient will receive a book and be recognized on an engraved plaque posted in the Mathematics Department.
